Why Austin is Great! (#342)

Filed under: Uncategorized — prothro @ 10:13 am

The State Capitol is in Austin!

There are lots of interesting things about the Capitol of Texas:

  • It is the largest state capitol building in America
  • Behind the Speaker’s desk in the House Chamber are the remains of the flag that flew over San Jacinto
  • The original 1889 horse hair stuffed chairs are still at the Capitol
  • The buildings exterior is constructed from “red-stone” granite that was quarried just 50 miles away from the building
  • The construction of the building was funded through the barter of a large piece of land
  • The rotunda features portraits of every president or governor of Texas. Each time there is a newly elected governor, every picture is moved one space to the left to make room for the new portrait
  • There are some interesting tales about the Goddess of Liberty Statue that adorns the Capitol (You can read some of them here. You can also see how very unattractive the Goddess is up close, since her features were exaggerated so she’d look good from below.)

Anybody else have some good Capitol facts? I’ve heard rumors of an underground tunnel that goes from the Capitol to the airport. And I want to go to there.

  2. Wow, that picture of her up close is creep-tastic.
I would love to know how long it takes them to move all the pictures every time there is a new governor, they go up to the 4th floor if i remember correctly.
